Ah, marketers. We use more acronyms than NASA, and our jargon changes more frequently than Irish weather.
Have you been in a marketing meeting, and suddenly someone starts speaking in code? “What in the world are they talking about? SEO? KPI? CTA?” “Traffic? I thought this was a video call?” Sound familiar? To help you talk the talk, we’ve compiled a glossary of terms. Here we’ll cover some of the most used acronyms and terms:
Backlinks
Backlinks are all of the links on other websites that point to your website. Backlinks are also known as inbound links.
Bounce Rate
Bounce rate is the percentage of visitors to a website who quickly leaves the website without really looking at it.
Churn Rate
Your churn rate is the amount of customers/followers you have lost during a particular time-period.
Example: if you start the month with 100 followers and end with 97, your churn rate would be 3%
Click Bait
Content that is designed to entice people to click, typically by overpromising or being intentionally misleading in headlines
Customer Lifetime Value
Customer Lifetime Value predicts the net profit attributed to the entire future relationship with a customer.
Engagement Rate
Engagement rate is a popular social media metric that measures the level of engagement (likes, shares, saves, comments, etc.) that a piece of created receives. Engagement rate is used to tell if your posts/message are resonating with your followers.
Evergreen Content
Evergreen content is content that continues to provide value to readers regardless of when they see it. A piece of evergreen content is timeless, valuable and of high quality.
Geotargeting
Geotargeting is a type of advertising that uses location data to target potential leads or prospective customers based on their geographical location.
Impressions
The number of people who view your ad, social media post or blog.
Keyword
Keyword is one word or several words that people use when searching for a particular subject online.
Keyword Stuffing
Keyword stuffing is including as many keywords as possibly with the sole purpose of ranking higher in organic search.
Landin Pages
A landing page is an individual web page used to promote specific marketing or advertising campaigns. Landing pages are designed to encourage visitors to follow the CTA — sign up for a webinar or giveaway, purchase a sale item, etc.
Lazy Load
Lazy Load is when data/images/videos are only loaded on a webpage when it’s needed rather than loading everything at the same time. This is done to improve performance, decrease load time and save system resources.
Link Building
Link Building is the process of acquiring links from other websites to your website.
Live
Live is when a website, landing page, blog post etc. is made available to use by the public
Meta Description
A meta description is a summary of a webpage that appears under the page name on a search engine. It should give a brief description of the page’s content, include relevant keywords and be between 50-159 characters (including spaces).
Off-Page Optimization
Off-Page Optimization is methods that you can use to increasing the ranking of a website through off-site promotion, including link building, social media, email marketing, etc.
On-Page Optimization
On-Page Optimization is elements on your web page that you can control in order to make it visible to search engines, including heading tags, internal links, fast loading pages, use of sitemaps, etc.
Persona
A persona is a semi-fictional representation of your ideal customers based on marketing research and data. A persona includes a breakdown of demographics, behaviours, goals, need, motivations and professional careers.
Also known as: Buyer Persona, Marketing Persona
Remarketing
Remarketing (also known as retargeting) is the process of serving targeted ads to people who have already visited or taken action on your website. It allows you to position targeted ads to a defined audience (one that has previously visited your site) as they browse other pages on the Internet.
Example: Have you looked at an item of clothing on a website, left that website and noticed an ad for that product on a Facebook or another site? That’s remarketing.
Website Traffic
Website Traffic is the total amount of users who visit a website. Web traffic is measure in visits, sometimes called “sessions” and is a common way to measure online business effectiveness at attracting an audience
Marketing Acronyms
CPC (Cost Per Click)
Cost per click is the amount you pay for each click on one of your ads on platforms like Google AdWords or Bing Ads
CTA (Call to Action)
A call to action is the text, banner or image asking a visitor to literally take an action
Example: ‘click here’, join an email list, sign up for a webinar, buy a product, etc.
CTR (Click Through Rate)
Click through rate is the number of people that click on a link out of the total number of people who say the email, social ad or CTA on a website page.
Example: if 900 people saw your ad and 45 people clicked on the link, the CTR would be 5%
KPI (Key Performance Indicator)
Key performance indicators are quantitative benchmarks used to track how much progress you’re making towards your marketing goals.
PPC (Pay Per Click)
Pay per click is an online advertising model where advertisers run ads on a platform, typically a search engine, and pays a fee every time someone clicks on it.
SEO – Search Engine Optimisation
SEO (search engine optimization) is the digital marketing practice of optimizing a website, so it’s more likely to show up in unpaid search results
ROI (Return on Investment)
Return on Investment is the ratio that compares the gain or loss from an investment relative to its cost.
UGC (User Generated Content)
Content that is created by users of a service to provide contribution to social media, blogs, wikis, chats, podcasts, etc.
USP (Unique Selling Point)
A factor that differentiates your product or service from your competitors
Example: low cost, quality, etc.
WOM Marketing (Word of Mouth Marketing)
Word of mouth marketing is the oral or written advocacy of a product or service from a satisfied customer to a prospective customer. WOM is widely considered to be the most effective form of promotion
