5 Tips for Improving Your Copywriting

Copywriting isn’t just for blogs and articles. It also refers to ads, social posts, graphics – really any text you see. So what should you include in effective copywriting? Here’s our top 5 tips for improving your copywriting:

When someone reads an ad or social post, they always wonder, “What’s in it for me?”. People want to know how something will make their lives easier from the very beginning. Ask yourself what the main problem your brand or product solves is and focus on that.

Example:
❌ The world’s fastest and cheapest money transfer service.
✅ Get paid back by friends instantly. No fees.

Relatability is a BIG theme in social media right now. For videos, memes, graphics or copy, people connect more to something or someone if they can relate to them. Think about how you can relate your product or brand to something that people know really well.

Example:
❌ The world’s fastest and cheapest money transfer service.
✅ Send money like you send texts. No fees.

You want to make sure your copy is easy to read and understand – you know what you’re talking about, but your target audience might not. After writing your copy, re-read it and see if there are any filler words that can be taken out.

Example:
❌ In the event that you are unable to attend the conference, please be so kind to let us know as soon as possible.
✅ Can’t make it? Please let us know ASAP.

To create sharper sentences, place emphasis on the subject and use active verbs to describe the main action. Read what you’ve written out loud – if it doesn’t sound like something someone would say in a conversation, it’s not going to hit home with your audience.

Example:
❌ Accurate edits are adored by happy clients.
✅ Your client will adore your accurate edits.

Storytelling is such a powerful skill! Try to illustrate exactly what you’re trying to portray so that your audience gets the full picture of what you’re trying to say.

Example:
❌ Our company provides high-quality tutoring services.
✅ Johnny was failing math. After working with our tutors, he’s on track to graduate with honours.
